Catnip

Hi, this is my first devon so i'm still learning all their funny little ways but one recent thing i've noticed is Molly hates Catnip.

My Aunt who has regular cats said to spray it on things she should play with but she seems totally uninterested. Even toys i have bought her that came with catnip in them she has not played with at all.

Is this strange or do Devons not react to catnip the same as other cats?

  • Hi Jaki i have 3 devons and not one of them likes the cat nip plant that i have out side, but bernard my young's one loves the toys that have cat nip in them but only the small toys none of the big ones which is funny.
i dont think Devon's like it that much, but my boys do love cat grass so maybe you can try that for molly and see if she likes it.Smile.gif
  • I have a little catnip bag toy and most of my devons love it. They do not play with it daily, but if they do, they go crazy with it Grin.gif
  • Thank you all, i know molly would have more fun if we had two devon's but as it was she was kind of an experiment. My husband is allergic to cats and i'd heard devon's do not effect someone with cat allergies. It was hard enough to convince him to get one cat! But so far no allergies and he is totally in love with Molly.
  • Yes, my Devons all love a pot of fresh Cat Grass. My stud cat has his own pot of grass and the girls have theirs. I grow new pots for them as they like it young and sweet. They eat it down to the stump!

  • My 2 boys aren't interested in catnip either. I have grown a plant especially for them, but they don't go near it. On the other hand, whenever I bring in some silverbeet leaves from the garden, they go wild over it and would make themselves sick eating it if I let them.
They're all just individuals I guess!
  • some of my devs adore cat nip others dont ( we have a total of five devs) - the siams dont like it at all and the moggies react in various ways only a couple of cats love catnip - so dont think its breed related what they like or dislike really
  • pps we bought a pot of catnip play bubbles from the petshop - the old sort where you use a plastic spoon with a small hole and then simply blow old fashioned soap bubbles but these contain catnip instead - its worked so well in this summer heatwave when some cats have been stroppy ( ie upset short tempered at the heat here) and its apparently acceptable to all our cats - they sit and wwatch the bubbles of catnip floating down from the ceilings to the floors and it is a calming effects...ps petsathome stores in the UK costs a couple of pounds sterling per small pot and lasts ages...like this product !

  • Liley could care less about catnip. We wanted to get something new for her, so we bought a tub of catnip and sprinkled it on the carpet. She loved it that one time, and only that one time. I have sprinkled it after and she doesn't even bother to walk over - I even tried putting it in a sock and she does not care for it.
