  • oh sorry

what do you think about our devon rex test for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?

    you believe it is necessary?
  • well, I think it is very very important to test all our cats every 15/18 months..
Every year there are more and more cases of devons with HCM.
Futhermore the Devon rex breed has been included in the list of breeds where the disease is more present.
  • I'm not convinced that HCM is a general problem for the breed, but testing is good in order to try and find out. It's certainly a problem within some blood lines but at least in Sweden I can't see a widely spread problem.
  • I feel your cat naboo is sick.

    What test do you use?

    eco dooplers???
  • So sorry to hear your cat has HCM.
I think HCM is a disease that hits all breeds, but is present in some breeds more then another. I think testing is very important, but not only on HCM, also PKD and Patella Luxation is seen in the devons and I know a few cases of PKD. It is such a pity cause specialy PKD can be rule out so easily.

Hello everyone, I am the happy mother of two Devon Naboo and Gnappetta
Unfortunately one of my two Devon is sick with HCM
I discovered her illness some years ago by chance
She is currently controlled by a cardiologist who works with the Italian Center HCM
I also tried to add this information to the database PawPeds; PawPeds did not allow me to enter this information because I'm not part of their study but of an italian study
Below is Naboo pedigree, for all who want to take note of it

  • Nathalie I agree with you!
  • There is a new database started here in Holland for HCM and PKD testresults, results from all over the world can be send in, different languages are available at the website.
    You can find it here:
This will help us breeders a lot! So please send in testresults if you have one!!

  • Last friday three of my Devons were scanned.
My new USA boy and UK girl were okay, HCM negative and PKD free.
But my other boy Mr. Bean is now after a second scan tested HCM positive. I am very sad about this, I have always scanned my breedingcats and untill now all were negative. Mr. Bean's mother is also negative.
I have never sold his offspring for breeding, so I am glad about that.
Unfortunately he has mated another breeder's girl free of charge, who has sold a son of him to the USA as a stud. And from a mating to another breeder's girl the whole litter was sold for breeding, this was not my idea and I would be sad if others now get the same problem in their offspring.
So anyone who has these cats in their pedigrees, please stay alert and have your cats scanned.
My intention has always been that untill I know what is behind my cats and I am fully aware that there are no problems I will not sell a cat for breeding.
  • Hi Adrie,
I'm very sorry about your Mr. Bean.

But thank you very much for being so open about it.

I wish all the best to your boy.
    Vale
