Kittens not doing well!!

hi everyone,

i am looking for some advice i have a litter of 5 kittens that were born 8/9. 3 of the babies (all boys) are doing great nice fat little tums but my 2 girls are falling behind. this queen has never been the best mum and is very protective to the point she attacks you and will bite ect, so i am in a situation where i dont know what to do i have another girl due in about 5 days she is the most amazing mum and i know she would take these two girls in a heart beat. does anyone have some ideas how i get these 2 bubbas through the next 5 days, do i take them and hand feed? do i just sneak them out and do top up feeds? or do i just let nature take its course :-( i have never been able to keep a girl out of this littler and i really want to keep the point and a friend wants the patched tortie and white.

any ideas would be wonderful right now as i just cant decide what to do

thanks

amanda

  • I would totally take them from mom and start hand feeding if she isnt doing it herself. I wonder if they could try nursing off the mom to be right now...wouldnt her milk be in yet? In any case if the present mom isnt going to let these ones nurse I would think its their best interest to intervene...good luck and keep us posted on their progress!
  • Hi Amanda

I was in a similar position with 1 surviving kitten and mum wanting to bite and scratch me every time I went near her.
I was advised by a more experienced breeder to remove the kitten from mum and handraise, which I did for 2 weeks then put the kitten in with a new born litter. Mum accepted the kitten and everything went just fine.

    Cheers

  • hi i have been hand rearing a litter of kittens from birth 4 weeks old tomorrow all abs fine! if mum is producing milk then obv mums milk is better than a substitute however it could be the boys are stronger there for the girls are being forced off the nipple i would sugest hand feeding them but put them back with mum so she can do the rest and if they get a bit of milk from mum great!!! then if your other queen will take them that would be great! i would defo start to hand rear them feeding every couple of hours also get some multivit drops for them, its hard work but well worth it some people think and believe in letting nature take its cause, my op were there is life is hope if id not hand reared my litter we certainly wouldnt have them now, luckily my queen was really happy for me to hand feed she knew i was helping, if your queen is a little over protective the problem could be of your smell on the kittens so if you can handle them very little that be ideal by ensuring you cover them back with her smell after each feed this can be done by leaving a dry cloth in the kittening box so it will have her and litters smell on then just wipe over each kitten after each feed and put back in box, dont give up!!!!!!!!!!!! you can do it and its only for a few days till your other queen delivers, if you can get them through next few days once your other queen starts delivering i would use the after birth by wiping it over the the 2 girls so they have some blood on your other queen will lick it off and totally accept them,
if you want any help and advice regarding hand rearing them please ask im only to happy to help, also have you kept a weight record!!! keep me informed and just ask if you need any advice good luck x

  • You have a couple of tiny ones there Amanda.. especially the point girl. I feed Biolac when I need to sup feed and have generally had success with feeding with a dropper. Best of luck with them.
