Lack of a fur coat and colour?

Hi everyone,

I am new to Devon zone, and am thrilled to find such a fabulous forum to share with others who love Devon's as much as myself.  We have waited quite some time to get our Devon Rex, which we appropriately named Gizmo.  I really did want "Jinx" but my son thinks otherwise, so Gizmo has stayed.

I have a couple of questions and even though have googled, I get contradicting answers, so am unsure.  Gizmo has very little hair, actually he is quite bald.  Is he likely to develop a further coat?  He will be 5 months old on the 6th of August.

I also would like to know what colour he is?  He has fawny/cream coloured front paws, but looks like a red tabby in his tail and face.  There is no colour to the rest of him (what fur there is), just a creamy colour. There is a photograph of Gizmo in my profile picture.

We have only had this precious boy for 3 weeks and he has settled in very well and is the most adorable cat, in every way possible.  He loves using my leg as a scratching post though and I hope to get him out of that, as my poor legs are looking rather injured!

When he first arrived, we took him to the vet as he was sneezing :-(  he had cat flu, which transferred to our other cat, Malinki who is a brown Burmese.  Thankfully, Malinki has had all her vaccinations, but alas she still managed to pick up the virus and needed treatment.  Now I am aware they have both had cat flu, it will be a reoccurring event when stressed.  This saddens me.... and I am so disappointed to be sold a not well cat - but of course wouldn't swap him for the world.

Thanks

Sandie

  • Welcome to Devon Zone & the delights in being owned by a devon

He may develop more coat as he get older.  I thought that he mught be a Van but I'm not very good with colours.  If you look at my photos you will see Bobby who is a black tabby van.

  • Thanks Joy, your Bobby is so cute... they all are!!

  • Hi Marianne,  Yes I agree he looks cute without hair - I made him a coat out of one of my bedsocks to keep him warm!  I am so hoping that my two cats also follow with no more bouts of flu, it was a real stressing time.

So sorry to hear you lost one of your babies last year ... though, you are right introducing a new family member certainly would have been stressing... I'm so glad he didn't show signs of flu!!!!  Thanks for sharing that with me, certainly alleviates some of my own stress worrying about them.

  • I wouldn't say that you were sold a not well cat necessarily... it is normal for immune systems to be stressed in new environments. Your kitten was introduced to new viruses in his new environment and the flu was just his body's response to fighting infection. If a kitten is not fully vaccinated and is introduced to a new cat without a period of quarantine it's pretty much guaranteed that they will get sick. My little kitten wasn't vaccinated when I brought her home and she got a cold immediately. Luckily she powered through her illness and has been happy and healthy ever since!

    Your kitten is beautiful!

  • Awww you got a baldie bum.  Bes is three now and  is pretty much bald. In winter her coat grows a few patches, and she gets some peach fuzz but she is still pretty much bald. The house has blankets strewn everywhere for her snuggling pleasure.

When we bought her home, the breeder told us to expect sneezing and snottiness. And if it happened we were to bring her back and she would be taken to the vet for a vitamin B injection. That's exactly what happened and we have had no problems with her since.

  • Cassandra, you gave me a good tip there .... I plucked out all my sons old blankets which I was about to toss to the Goodwill ... and now have them in places throughout the house for Gizmo - and he's using them.  Thank you!!  He also burrows into my jumpers, like a baby Kangaroo ... bounce in.  If I am not weather a jumper - he is into the t-shirt ... onto bare skin with claws.  I have lots of Gizmo signatures all over me LOL

Gizmo has come good with his illness, the vet gave him a course of antibiotics.  Within a few days his sneezing had stopped.  He returns on Monday for his desexing and micro-chipping .. so will be checked out again. Gizmo had really swollen glands under his neck.  I thought it was part of him, but now they are not swollen.

  • Lia, I'm afraid I will argue with you there.... sadly, he was ill. We had him to the vet the following morning that he arrived, as I knew something wasn't right with him sneezing, and a ripper temperature.  Perhaps, the lady didn't know .... perhaps the trip in the plane stressed my poor boy out, and he became ill very quickly.  Who knows.... but the main thing is he is so much better.  I was concerned, as it introduced the flu to my other cat ... who really suffered so much more than Gizmo.  It took 10 days for signs to show in Malinki.  I would be totally devastated if anything had of happened to either of them .... illness, sadly is a part of cats, and it is out there, whether the cat is immunised or not (something I recently learned).

I'm so glad your baby pulled through all well too .... it certainly is a big thing to settle into a new environment.
