Low birth weight kittens

Our Weekly Spotlight discussion for this week is

Low birth weight kittens

Would any Breeders like to share stories about low birth weight kittens they bred that surived?

What is the lowest weighing surviving kitten you have had?

Did the kitten require any special care? If so, what?

Was the kitten premature, or part of a large litter?

Please include photos if possible.

  • Our smallest surviving kitten was a little black smoke named Obi.

He was in a litter of 5 and the litter was born at full term. The other kittens were are good weights but Obi was a tiny 48 grams.

I wasn't very hopeful in the first couple of weeks. He was sup fed with a dropper from day one and he also had a supplement called Nutridrops.

At 2 weeks of age we visited the vet and he weighed in at 98 grams. I was really concerned but she said to keep doing what we were doing. From that day he took off.  Smile.gif

He is now a healthy happy 2 year old. He will always be a very special boy to me.  Smile.gif

  • If I have anything under 60g then I really don't hold out much hope for them (and lose them - if not straight away, then by the age of 3 weeks). That's fantastic - more hope the next time I have a tiny. I remember seeing pics of wrinkly Obi Grin.gif
  • Hi Nicole
Yes i got five weeks ago five kittens and one of them was 46 gram he was too hairless
He was a little bit feeding because he drinks by his mother but was not to strong enough because the other four put him every time from the nipple after four days he do it alone
Now he is a curly devon you can see it on facebook from a naked boy to a black curly boy now he weight after 5 weeks 450 gram
And ones i got a baby in the persian breed of 38 gram they born all with 57 days but it was too a black one and he was later a big boy

My smallest kitten was the last born of a litter of 6 she who I thought was a 'He' was born at about 34gms like a little skeleton.  She was so tiny it horrified me, I had to help her to the nipple but realised it was just too hard for her so I hand-raised her but also took her to her mother for what ever I could get her to drink.  I called her 'Hercules' because I thought I had better give her a strong name and because she was totally red and I thought she was a boy.  Hand raising from birth is so hard, feeding every three hours etc.  This little girl was such a strong little spirit though and I cannot describe the thrill I got when I finally got her to eat solid food and then she just started to take off.  She was such a wrinkly funny little girl we then called her 'Gherkin Piccallily'

  • Aww... Fantastic Smile.gif I will definitely have a bit more hope the next time I have a tiny.
  • That is great Adrie, would love to see some photos of him. Smile.gif

I can't imagine a surviving Persian born at 38 grams, that is amazing.

Karolyn, that is a wonderful story about Gherkin Piccallily!
