New Litter

Lulu finally had her kittens yesterday. Day 61, so a bit early. But good weights even though they were premature. Very exciting, she had 4 kittens, 2 male 2 female, and all are either pointed or pointed bicolour. What are the odds! (Lulu is chocolate smoke but she carries point). Last time i did this mating i didnt get one point!Anyway, Lulu's B Blood type and she was mated to Marlin who is an A, so it meant Tube feeding the little ones for the first 16hrs. All went well with that. We bought a little new born babies suit that fit her well to stop the kittens feeding from her.However... now that the 16hrs are up, the kittens wont nurse from her. Ive tried everything. So i am still tube feeding them. Im rather shattered as im feeding them every 2 - 3 hrs, and getting up throughout the night.Any advice on how i can get these kittens drinking off mum. Im worried because the longer they wont drink, the less likely it is that they ever will. Poor lulu cant understand why her babies dont want to drink from her. I have hand raised one litter before and would prefer not to be having to do it again as it's so draining.P.S The kittens look pretty pink/red in the pic as i was using the flash, but they are all white...

  • Hi Abby
See if you can get a cheap breast pump at the chemist and get milk from lulu
Give the babies a taste, and if necessary squirt a bit round their noses or down their throat.
Then hold them on the nipple and milk it with your fingers. Especially try this at the end of a three hour break when they are hungry.
I have done this and is worked for me, however it is all easy to write and quite another to do!
    But worth a try

  • Hi Abby
Sorry I don't have any advice to give, I am a very new breeder, I have only had one litter.

I was wondering though, when and if you have time would you mind explaining why you have to tube feed with the different blood types. Thanks in advance.

    Good luck with your babies.

  • Hi Peta,

I never thought of a breast pump. Good Idea. Have used this before? I have an one in my cupboard.

  • Abby, how is Lulu's milk supply????
  • I was thinking milk supply too.

If she does have milk, maybe miss a feed and put some milk (either Lulu's or formula) on her nipples so the babies smell it and it might encourage them to suckle.

If you are still concerned maybe just reduce the amount you are feeding them, to keep them hungry so they give it a shot.

How often are you tubing them and how many mls each are you giving them?
  • Its good Penny...

  • Ive tried all the ideas suggested above, except the breast pump.
Im feeding them 2-3ml every 2-3hrs. I hve tried leaving it for longer so they get hungry...
Oh well. I guess we get these problems sometimes with breeding. Im just so happpy to have kittens again....
  • Are you still tube feeding this morning Abby??

  • Hi Abby
Congrats with the new babies !!
I wish I lived closer to you and could give you a hand with the babies, hopefully they will start to suckle soon.
A breast pump does sound like a good idea ....
