Hey everyone, after being around Devons all my life I've decided to make the leap to breeding and showing these devilish little monkeys! I've read everything I can get my hands on, spent hours in front of a computer screen learning all I can. After my dog had a surprise litter (the getting pregnant was a surprise, after a few weeks the pups were not) one of the many things I've realized is I loved making some family that little bit better with a pet. But, what animal better then a Devon Rex! Now, don't get me wrong I'm not saying i only want to breed them for that reason, but it's really shown me what joy there is in breeding.Anyway, after my little ramble, I would love some tips and pointers on making the transition from owner to breeding/showing.NatassjaPerth, Western Australia

  • Hi Natassja,

I think the most important things to do before you start Breeding are to do as much research as you can (as you have been doing by the sound of it) and also finding a Breeder that can mentor you.

The best way to do that is to attend cat shows and get to know local Breeder's. It is important to attend Cat shows anyway so you can learn about correct type in Devon's. There are a couple of Associations you can register with in Western Australia, the links are here in THIS topic.  Smile.gif

    • Thanks for the reply! Im joining coawa, and trying to pick an awesome prefix. I have been in contact with a few breeders around oz. I'm lucky enough to be getting a queen from sue at kittams. Just waiting on their birth... Which is hopefully only a couple of weeks away.

  • can I suggest you get yourself a show quality neuter Devon & show for a couple of years first. This way you will get to be known by all the breeders & also get to know what to look for when breeding. Then try to get a mentor to start you off breeding. Devons are not the easiest breed to start off with. As they have different blood groups & some lines carry heart defects
